17 It began in 1887: The gramophone had just been invented and the first electric street lights had been switched on when a retail store called “Health Central (Gesundheitszentrale)” was opened in Berlin and laid the cornerstone for the development of an entire industry. Relationships between health and nutrition were known to only very few persons at that time. With the beginning of the twentieth century technical and economic developments in almost all areas of life had initi- ated a structural change which started to break the bonds of the ways of thinking of yesterday and focused on new knowledge instead of traditional experiences. The desire or even the necessity of eliminating the problems of modern industrial society led to the development of the reform houses. The first business which was called a reform house had the well-sounding name “Fountain of Youth” and opened in 1900 in Wuppertal. The forerunners of this “life reform” were, for example, classic representatives of naturopathy such as Prießnitz, Kneipp, Virchow, Bircher- Benner and later the physician and scientist Werner Kollath. They created product ideas which shape the reform house product line until today. Today, the reform house is a competent supplier of unique product offerings for a healthy lifestyle based on the idea of life reform. Vegetarian or respectively vegan foods, special dietary processed foods, nutritional supplements, natural medications and natural cosmetics are the main components of the ambitious product line. The overriding principles of the new form of quality are naturalness and sustainability.
